Huge fire at disused Edinburgh hospital

Over 60 firefighters worked through the night

Smoke could be seen across Edinburgh yesterday afternoon as the former Royal Victoria Hospital was engulfed in flames. Over 60 firefighters worked on containing the fire, with many working through the night.

The hospital, which is situated in the Craigleith area of Edinburgh, has been out of use for five years and was empty at the time of the fire.

Alex McMahon, Executive Director of NHS Lothian told the Tab: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Services are working hard to extinguish a fire in a closed off unoccupied part of the former Royal Victoria Hospital this evening (Monday 22nd May).

“We will be working with Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue to investigate the cause of the fire in due course.”

As of this morning, firefighters were still at the scene. There were no casualties from the incident.
