What’s your favourite dinosaur?

Asking the important questions

There’s nothing like a simple question to reveal the hidden movements of your soul – so here are your favourite dinosaurs. Feel free to judge.

Marco and Lewis, Law, fourth year

L: “T-Rex because it has got good combat abilities, like in King Kong. It can just kill everything else.”

M: “It’s an absolute fucking mad one.”

M: “I like the pterodactyl because it’s the only one I know and it flies. And it’d be cool to fly. It has an impressive wingspan too, I’d guess about a 10m wingspan.”

L: “I’m sure they vary in sizes.”

M: “I’d have a baby one as a pet because it’d be cute as well as quite scary, which is somehow kind of ideal.”

Fia, International Relations, second year

Wonderful T-Rex impersonation

“T-Rex might be my favourite because all the rest are ugly. I always find it funny about how they can’t do anything because their arms are too short – like in Toy Story. Apparently they are always sad because T-Rexs can’t hug each other.”

Oscar, Acrobatics and Aiden, Gymnastics, second year

O: “I liked space more as a child; I didn’t care for dinosaurs, they didn’t excite me. I was very narrow minded as a child.”

A: “Yeah, I wasn’t really into prehistoric shit”

Nathan, Spanish, second year

“I like raptors because they are fast.”

Molly, Economics with Environmental Studies, second year

channeling her inner predator

“Pterodactyl – it would be great to fly over things and pluck them from the ground, you know? It’s the best way to be predatorial. Have you seen Jurassic World? No? Ok so let me break it down for you. At the end of the movie you know there are like no other dinosaurs left to attack.

“And suddenly the pterodactyls break through the big glass thing and they just destroy everything, it’s not even the T-Rex that does it, it’s the Pterodactyls, the Pterodactyls! They are the most valuable player in the game, not that I identify with that because I’m definitely not the most valuable player in the game, but I do aspire to be like that.”

Nadja, English and Classics, second year

“I like the diplodocus because everyone says it differently.”

“Diplo-DO-cus”

“Di-PLOD-ocus”

“Diplo-DOC-us”

Which is it? Like, really though, does anyone know?

Nico, History and Politics, second year

“I like the Brontosaurus because it just seems like a very chill dinosaur. I couldn’t tell you too much about the Brontosaurus. Except I know it’s big and it eats leaves. They are bigger than everyone else – no one fucked with them and they didn’t really fuck with anyone else. And that’s pretty cool.”

Milly, Philosophy, second year

We don’t have a picture for Milly so we got Miles in to model in her place

“Brachiosaurus because I a few months ago I got a rubber from my friend Tam that was a brachiosaurus. Dinosaurs are actually the best! I have dinosaur duvet covers.”

David, Engineering, second year

“I like the triceratops because it is one of the only dinosaurs that can fight against the T-Rex: it has got its shield and its three horns, it’s pretty big. The T-Rex just can’t challenge it.”

Esme, Mechanical Engineering, PhD

“So my favourite dinosaur is the one that I remember most from the natural history museum down in London, that would be the two-wang-o-saurus. Mainly for its name, turns out it doesn’t actually have two wangs, but a great name for a dinosaur nonetheless.”

So disappointing.

Rafe, Philosophy, first year

Suffering from fresher’s flu

“Should I say something really snarky and politically current? My favourite dinosaur is Jeremy Corbyn.”

Imogen, Music, first year

“I like the Diplodocus because it’s tall like me, has a long neck, it’s vegetarian and loves eating salad. All it does all day is eat leaves and preen its neck over into bushes. It’s quite solid on the bottom, but it’s got a really long neck. You could say it’s my spirit dinosaur. I’m veggie too, that’s why they call me the diplodopest!”

George, Sustainable Energy Systems, MA

“Triceratops has always been my favourite since I was a kid; it never stopped being my favourite.”

Always and forever.

Casper, Valdemar and Andy, Mechanical Engineering

C: “I think it has to be the T-Rex because it was the king of the dinosaurs. In Latin Tyrannosaurus Rex literally means king of the tyrant lizards.”

V: “I have a question about the one with the triangular plate spines along the back (Stegosaurus). It’s kind of a pointless feature for a dinosaur, why are they there? It must be terrible for balance. That is a major concern for dinosaurs.”

A: “Well Pterodactyls are flying lizards, which is pretty sweet. I like that they have a really long head because it seems like it’s a weird shape but it’s like that so it can eat out of small holes and that’s clever.”

V: “Probably also good for balance, too.”

A: “They’ve also got claws in the middle of the wing so it can hang onto the rock face when it’s chilling … It’s basically Charizard.”

V: “I feel like a lot of Pokemon were inpired by the dinosaurs.”

C: “Definitely”
