We asked what you wished you knew before coming to Edinburgh uni

‘The weather here is unbearable’

To an innocent sixth former uni seems a giant leap into the unknown.

Inevitably (and perhaps inaccurately) we focus our minds on the exciting prospect of endless one-night stands and liver abuse.

But let’s face it, none of us did the faintest bit of useful research before we set foot on Edinburgh’s cobbled streets.

Here are some gems to pass on to the year below.

Max, first year Economics

“Why is it this cold in Edinburgh? The weather here is unbearable compared to St Petersburg!”

Maria, third year Chemical Engineering

“I didn’t know that living independent of parents would be so hard, especially when they are all the way in Indonesia!”

Naomi, second year Sustainable Development

“What to take to my halls.

“I was half-way up to Edinburgh and I went “Oh shit, I forgot the spoons.””

Alex, first year Economics and Politics

“I should have chosen Pollock catered over Deaconess non-catered. I feed myself now and then.”

Izzy, first year English

“I wish someone had told me how much reading English involves.

“And, I mean Middle English, it’s like a different language! I didn’t realise I signed up to a language degree!”

Harry, first year Social Anthropology

“I wish I knew I was expected to drink more than two pints a night at Freshers. I would have trained over summer.”
