Spotted: Hamster in blizzard

A Syrian hamster has been found wandering down Spey Street.

A very chilly Poppy

Perhaps she was trying to escape the fate of James White’s furry friend, or maybe she just fancied a wander.

Either way, Poppy the hamster was found wandering Edinburgh’s streets during a blizzard on Monday.

The Syrian hamster was spotted by a member of the public on Spey Street in Leith.

“Poppy is around a year old and in good condition,” said Duncan Robertson from the Scottish SPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians animal rescue and rehoming centre.

“It’s very lucky she was found by someone who helped her as there was a severe blizzard on Monday evening and it was bitterly cold.

“Poppy could have easily come to harm so we’re really glad she’s now safe.”

It’s not clear whether Poppy was intentionally abandoned by her owner, or whether she accidentally escaped.

The Scottish SPCA are calling for Poppy’s owner to come forward, but promise to re-home her if no one fesses up.
