‘We’re the best band in Durham’: Meet the gorgeous boys of Caylon

They’ve just released their first EP

They make songs about cocaine. They hate acapella groups. And the more you hear, the more you realise: It's all about Richie.

Caylon are a four-piece Durham outfit who've just released a four-track EP. The Tab spoke to them, and asked them four questions each.

Playing frequent gigs across the city and beyond, their long-term ambitions are sky-high. But for now, you can check out these spicy student-rockstars and what they secretly think about each other, here.

Tom is the most recent member of Caylon

Which member of the band do you have a crush on?

It's a tough decision with so many lookers in the band, but I reckon Nathaniel just about takes it with his ginger locks and boyish charm.

Which member of the band do you secretly hate, and why?

Richie. For being better at guitar – and an animal in the bedroom.

What's your favourite song in the EP, and why?

Bernice – after the many hours spent trying to get a perfect take that both Richie and I were happy with, artistically as well as technically, I think I grew a certain attachment to the song that can only come about from its realisation frustrating you for such a long period of time.

Take your leave is a close second though, just because I think it's a very beautiful piece of music.

What's the wildest experience you've had thanks to Caylon?

Even as a moderately new member I’ve had some absolutely mental experiences thanks to Caylon. The downright most mental would be the beautiful friendships I've made along the way. <3

How can you resist that smile?

Which member of the band do you have a crush on?

Probably Nathan. Strong, silent, stoic. We're also both equally bad vocalists. Gotta stick together when you're tone deaf in a band.

Which member of the band do you secretly hate, and why?

Richie. We hate him because we wish we could be him. He's also criticised the Red Hot Chili Peppers the most, which is pretty serious.

What's your favourite song in the EP, and why?

No question, it's Zenosyne Affinity. It's so much fun to play, and that bridge section is just damn funky. Any excuse I have to hit my bass hard and pull weird faces is a plus. Just don't be lonely tonight!

What's the wildest experience you've had thanks to Caylon?

I'm not sure about wildest, and it's kind of lame, but the few occasions someone has recognised me from Caylon is always a surreal experience.

But with any luck it's something we'll all have to get used to… Also getting shouted at to take my shirt off at Cuths Day ?

Look at that hair

Which member of the band do you have a crush on?

Nathaniel. He’d be such a firm yet gentle lover.

Which member of the band do you secretly hate, and why?

Tom Katon, because he's slightly better looking than me.

What's your favourite song in the EP, and why?

Take Your Leave. It epitomises my sexual desperation. On a serious note, I do get dumped a lot, so this break up song is one I keep coming back to.

What's the wildest experience you've had thanks to Caylon?

Once me and Nathan were asked to be in a three way, what a night! Jokes, she just asked us over after a gig, but it was pretty much implied, of course we declined…

I once threw a camera at Nathan in anger because he forgot to bring a bass drum microphone to a music video shoot. Unfortunately I missed and broke the camera.

Boyfriend material?

Which member of the band do you have a crush on?

Tom. He’s such a happy, nice guy.

Which member of the band do you secretly hate, and why?

Richie. It's a love/hate relationship. What makes him so good at what he does can also make him a pain to work with.

What's your favourite song in the EP, and why?

Zenosyne Affinity has got to be my favourite. Although I think Bernice has a killer chorus, Zenosyne is funky and was great fun to play and record. The section after my little solo with the funky bass line is tight!

What's the wildest experience you've had thanks to Caylon?

After our empty shop gig, we ended up at a house party surrounded by people doing coke. No, we didn’t do any ourselves. We’re not quite that rockstar yet.
