The new Vice Chancellor has been racking up travel, accommodation and ‘Subsistence’ expenses worth a whopping £10, 285.46

At the same time the university is increasing accommodation fees to £7,000 just as grant cuts are cut. Durham spends thousands of pounds on vanity projects like art, and has the most expensive Vice-Chancellor offices in the whole country. The VC office last year cost the uni over half a million pounds in salary costs alone. The office has now exclusively revealed the eye-watering costs associated with expenses. The costs include over £7, 552.04 on air travel alone, while the VC also claimed expenses for taxis and train travel.

Harry Cross, the co-chair of Durham Students for University Reform, told The Tab: “The Tab has done an excellent job holding the University to rigorous standards of transparency.

“With costs rapidly rising for students in all areas, openness on how the University spends our money is crucial, and the Tab has once again shown what quality student journalism can achieve.”

The uni spokesperson told The Tab: “Durham is a world top 100 university and global in its outlook.

“The Vice-Chancellor needs to travel extensively in order to maintain and build University relationships with research partners, higher education institutions, businesses and alumni around the world, which is an important part of his leadership role.”
