Results are in: What’s the worst thing in Durham?

Apparently we really love cobbled streets

1,108 of you voted on what you hate most about our favourite cathedral city.

The poll has now been closed, the results counted and verified, and you’ve decided your worst thing about Durham is: Lads.

241 of you thought laddish socials to be Durham’s most painful experience.

Grey Chemistry second year and conveniently named Will Ladd stood by the hated bunch. He said: “Ladd by name, lad by nature.”

Ticketed events came a close second with 177 votes.

Cobbled streets came last place as the least hated thing in Durham.

Whether you fall over and have to awkwardly style it out in front of the guy from your tutorial, or spill everything in front of the nearby busker — the streets were not made for poise and elegance. All of which, of course, are amplified by alcohol.
But only 16 of you hated this the most, clearly we’d all rather have landscape beauty than our lives.

The DSU slid into third place with 175 votes.

It wasn’t exactly a pull factor when innocently thinking about where you were going to spend the next three years of your life.

It’s a small, dingy building that cannot compete with the likes of Leeds Student Union which actually hosts a club event every week. But for the occasional wine soc or ballroom dance class the eyesore isn’t too shabby.
