Durham is opening its doors to lecturers fleeing Syria

A ‘lifeline to academics at risk’

| UPDATED

The university has promised to help professors fleeing from Syria.

Durham will provide free accommodation and workspace for academics – provided their research interests match those of the university.

Durham University is a supporter of CARA (Council for At-Risk Academics), which aims to give “a lifeline to academics at risk”.

A spokesperson for the uni said: “Durham University supports Cara (the Council for At-Risk Academics) in its aim to give ‘a lifeline to academics at risk’ by hosting academics from Syria whose research interests match those of the University.

“They are offered free accommodation and a desk to work from, but the main element of support is re-integration into a research community so they can continue their work in safety.”

A statement from the university tells us that The Centre for Academic and Researcher Development at Durham, which aims to support those undertaking postgraduate study, will open its services to these academics and other CARA beneficiaries in the North East region.
