Body formally identified as Euan Coulthard

Police are satisfied there are no suspicious circumstances

The body found in the River Wear on Friday morning has been formally identified as Euan Coulthard, police have confirmed.

After the formal identification took place a pathologist carried out a post mortem examination. The details of this will be forwarded to HM Coroner but police are satisfied there are no suspicious circumstances regarding Euan’s death.

The coroner is expected to arrange for an inquest to open, probably later this week following which Euan’s family can make arrangements for his funeral.

Supt Colin Williamson said; “We are very grateful for the assistance we received in our searches from Euan’s friends and fellow students, as well as all the other agencies and the volunteers who took part. Our thoughts are very much with Euan’s family at this sad time.”

The University are offering counselling to any students affected by the Mary’s second year’s death.

Professor Simon Hackett, the Principal of St Mary’s College told the Chronicle: “Our thoughts are with Euan’s family and his friends at this very sad time. We will be working with Euan’s friends to consider how to bring the whole college community together at this time to mark our loss.

“The university is offering support to any students who have been personally affected by Euan’s death.”
