Durham Union Secretary arrested and bailed over rape allegations
He has resigned from his position
The Secretary of the Durham Union Society has resigned from his position following his arrest over allegations of rape.
He was taken in for questioning on 31st October and bailed pending further investigation, according to Palatinate.
The Tab has chosen not to name the Secretary at this stage, even though we have identified him via his position.
A police spokesperson said: “We can confirm a 20-year-old man was arrested by police on 31st October on suspicion of the rape of a female.
“This relates to an alleged offence at an address in Durham city in May of this year. He has been interviewed by detectives from the local safeguarding team and released on police bail, pending further enquiries.”
Union President Joe Hill said: “At this time we’re not offering a comment.”
A source from the Union society – which is a debating society not a Student Union – confirmed: “[Name redacted] has resigned as secretary.”
