BREAKING: Police Attempt to Identify Body as That of Sope Peters

Body found at water’s edge near Prebends Bridge this morning, believed to be that of missing student Sope Peters

A body was found by a rowing crew whilst on an outing near Prebends Bridge earlier today.

The Crime Scene Investigation Unit arrived with means to carry out a search of the river.

Police cordoned off Prebends and Framwellgate Bridge, blocking off access to the riverbanks. People were being turned away at both ends as the recovery was carried out.

Firemen at the scene near where the body was found.

Two fire engines, two fire and rescue trucks and a police car were parked on the Cuth’s side of Prebend’s bridge, and search and rescue teams were out in boats with what appeared to be equipment to search the water.

Access was blocked to both sides of the river.

The police could not confirm whether a doctor was present to pronounce the body.

Police have not yet released an official statement, but in the last hour, senior staff of Hatfield College sent out the following email to their students:

Hatfield College Chapel will be open tonight at 7.30pm until 9pm.

Everyone is welcome to drop in, there will not be a service, but it will be an opportunity for people to come for quiet reflection if they wish.
