Westwood continues sexist rants at Student Radio Awards

There was drama at the Student Radio Awards at the O2 as Nick Grimshaw failed to turn up, girls broke into tears and Westwood asked for girls to make noise if they didn’t have fake body parts – quality entertainment.

| UPDATED

On Thursday evening this reporter headed down to the Student Radio Awards at the O2.

The snazzy program

It was, for the most part, an incredible night with amazing food, entertainment and a good selection of celebs.  However, it’s fair to say there was a reasonable dose of drama.

The room before all the drama started…

Drama 1: Grimmy didn’t turn up

As I was informed by a student on a neighbouring table before the ceremony – and as was confirmed by Dave Berry, his would-be co-host – Grimmy could was ill and could not make the event (according to his Twitter he had walked into a wall). This was not OK.

“What do you mean Grimmy isn’t coming?!”

Luckily, just as disappointment was setting in, Greg James stood up from the audience and spontaneously decided to volunteer in his colleague’s place and proceeded to provide top-quality radio-banter for the rest of the night.

Regardless, Nick Grimshaw has yet to issue a Twitter apology about his absence, which is annoying. Poor form, Grimmy.

Drama 2: Two students were chosen to get married on stage and then stormed out.

As befitting the evening’s Vegas theme, naturally the producers thought it would be a good idea to get two drunken students to participate in a shotgun wedding (it was not).

However, it seemed the couple that roaming reporter Alice Levine selected from the audience were a bit too pissed.

I won’t pretend that I know exactly what happened up there, but it resulted in the couple exiting the stage from opposite ends and the girl (after making a delightful speech and kissing Greg James) storming off straight into the bathrooms to have a cry. Oh dear. Nice one guys.

Drama 3: Westwood was being a douche.

Participating in the Radio 1 vs commercial radio DJ battle, ‘yer boy Westwood’ came on to tumultuous booing.

Given his history of being inappropriate at student events, he lived up to his name by being generally annoying. After a feeble plug for his new commercial radio show, he spent a long time asking the female audience members to make some noise if certain body parts weren’t fake including our ‘titties’ and ‘arses’.

All in all, although he did play the Fresh Prince theme song, I would rather Westwood had kept his curiosities to himself.

Nonetheless an incredible night and well done to all the winners and nominees!
