Hatfield Student records ‘Leazes EP’

Timmy Fisher talks to the Tab about his new EP, reveals his musical influences and why Geology doesn’t rock.

Last term, Timmy Fisher- a Hatfield third year music student- wrote and recorded an EP from his house on Claypath. I sat down with him to talk music, Durham and Trevor McDonald.

Starting his Durham career as a geologist he decided to swap his rocks for rock n roll four weeks in, switching to the music department. Fisher cites his influences as ‘the usual’ – with an emphasis on George Harrison’s writing, alongside a love for Queen. More eclectically, he listens to a lot of Susanne Sundfør, Alt-J and Tom Odell. Bastille, King Charles, Nick Drake and Jake Bugg all appear in his recently added list. From this list of music you can begin to get a feel for what his EP might hold- and you can hear the bold melodies of Queen alongside some of the quirkiness of Alt-J on the record.

So, on to the EP. Fisher tells me that it was all recorded last term using only GarageBand, an interface bought for £40 and a mic borrowed from the music department. Without a pop-screen to disguise plosives, he had to be very careful about singing too emphatically, but this was perhaps a happy accident as the soft, careful tone can be felt throughout the lowkey EP.

I pushed him for some quick questions to flesh out the man behind the music.
Cats/ Dogs – ‘dogs, for obvious reasons’
Marmite – ‘no thanks’
Beer – ‘Bud’
Trendy Flatcap/ Shooting Flatcap – ‘trendy’
Dr Dre/ Dr Doolittle – ‘Dre’
Morgan Freeman/ Trevor McDonald – ‘McDonald’
David Cameron/ David Guetta – ‘none of the above’
Sovereign/ Taddy – ‘Taddy’

Well, I think we now have a pretty good idea of what makes Timmy tick. When asked about dream collaborations, he professed a dubstep guilty pleasure, and would like to get one of his songs remixed by Rusko as ‘it is something totally different.’ Well Rusko, if you’re reading this Timmy’s details are at the bottom…Timmy is playing in a Bubble Burning event at Market Vaults on Thursday 21st so come down to support! Here’s a recording of him playing live.
