The Cuths vs Stepheson Floodlit Cup quarter final was called for the second time in a row last weekend after a bad injury 50 minutes into the game meant that it had to be cancelled.

This follows from the first Floodlit match between the two sides the week before, which lasted just 60 minutes before being abandoned when the rubber crumb pitch became dangerously icy.

Overall, this quarter final encounter has lasted a total of over 110 minutes without a result being recorded.

The match started with Stepheson in the ascendency as they went over for a try in the first 5 minutes.

As the conversion flew over they sensed an upset was on the cards, with Cuths looking sluggish in the opening exchanges.

However, with Cuths realising that this could potentially be their last match of the season, they stepped up their game, quickly equalising with a try and a conversion of their own.

Cuths remained on top for the rest of the half, scoring two more tries in the process, to put themselves ahead 17 – 7 at the half time interval.

Cuths continued in the same manner in the second half, as they pressed against the Stepenson back line, showing the sort of form that saw then thrash Stephenson 31 – 5 in the league encounter earlier in the season.

Although after 55 minutes, with Cuths looking to break down the Stepho line once again, one of their players unfortunately suffered a bad leg injury after what seemed like an innocuous tackle.

This led to a lengthy break in play, with an ambulance having to make its way onto the crumb pitch.

After this delay there was not enough time left to finish the game, with Durham women’s football scheduled to play straight after the floodlit game.

With the next game rearranged for Sunday, both teams will be hoping this encounter will be third time lucky…
