A shotgun was fired


A shotgun was fired on Gosford Street at 2.50am this morning, in the car park next to Sainsbury's.

The shotgun was discharged from a car and the suspects involved fled the scene before police arrived.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police told The Coventry Tab: “Police were called to Far Gosford Street just before 2.50am this morning after a shotgun was discharged from a dark coloured car.”

There was a heavy police presence on the street last night and this morning with an area cordoned off by police tape. Sainsbury's was closed as a result of the incident.

A 36-year old man was arrested as a suspect but has since been released. West Midlands Police told The Coventry Tab: “The 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm has been released from custody.

“Detectives have eliminated him from the enquiry and he will face no further action.”

A post on Spotted Coventry City shared the news last night, along with a picture of Gosford Street Sainsbury's and Empire which showed police tape cordoning off the area.

A comment on the post from Phil Rooney, manager at Empire, detailed his account of the incident. It said: "Last night at around 3.30am there was an incident on Far Gosford St.

"A group of lads that stand regularly outside of Sainsbury’s and on the Sainsbury’s car park were shot at no one was hurt – part of the Sainsbury’s signage was damaged.

"The car was on the Sainsbury’s side of the road the “gun” was pointed at the lads at the shop."

"We had a club night on after that finished at 4am – there only a handful of customers in Empire at this time and we were closing down just as this happened."
