Here are the Cardiff University accommodations as songs from Charli XCX’s latest album, Brat
Brat and it’s the same except it’s Cardiff uni halls so it’s not.
Brat summer has well and truly taken over everyone’s lives since it was released in June and it looks like it might be forecasted to last past the warmer months.
Gen Z, and even some politicians, have gone crazy for Charli’s sixth studio album, creating memes and a brand new social media discourse with Brat at the centre. So, we’ve hopped on the bandwagon.
Whether you’re coming to Cardiff in September or want to reminisce the joys of first year accommodation, you can find out which song we have assigned to each hall of residence and why.
Talybont South – Club Classics
Classic. It’s in the name. Taly South is renowned for its outgoing nature and community of parties and pre-drinks. Be it a Friday night or a Monday night, you are bound to hear those club classics coming from the bluetooth speaker of the flat below you.
If you want to dance with George, this is the place to be.
University Halls – Guess
A staggering 35 minute walk away from the main buildings, University Halls are more than mysterious, leaving the rest of us to guess how they manage.
How do they make it to their nine am’s? Guess. How long does it take them to walk to the netball social in Cathays every Wednesday? Guess. Have they ever even see the bay? Guess.
We will never know.
Talybont North – Talk Talk
Talybont North is arguably the quiet one in the friendship group. A nervous demeanour, sandwiched between the grandeur of Taly Gate and the obnoxious nature of South, it doesn’t exactly have many main character traits.
It can only be expected that out of all the accommodations, it would struggle to strike up a conversation with its crush, or be the type to follow them into the bathroom at a party.
Aberconway – Apple
I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and neither will you when you live so close to your lecture halls.
It’s not the most popular of the accommodations (no offence to any previous or upcoming residents) but I can imagine it’s beige brick aesthetic might make you want to drive to the airport.
Colum Hall – Sympathy is a Knife
It couldn’t even be Taly if it tried.
Whether this song is about Charli and Taylor’s beef, no one will know, but if any accommodation is intimidated by its counterpart up the road – it’s Colum Hall.
Talybont Court – 360
She’s so Julia.
Taly Court is definitely the most underrated accommodation within all of Talybont. It isn’t as far away as North and Gate, only runs at a few pounds more expensive than South, and you get the comfort of sitting on a sofa.
You will certainly like what you see in Taly Court, it’ll always be the one.
Talybont Gate – Mean Girls
Everyone dreams of living in Taly Gate before they come to Cardiff, it has the luxurious elements of private accommodation without the added price tag.
Perhaps it is the “it” girl of the university’s accommodation, everyone hates to admit it but it’s true.
Senghennydd Court + Hall – 365
It’s super close to the student union and only on the edge of town, how could Senghennydd not be a 365 party girl?
You might find the George Daniel to your Charli XCX in the cosy rooms on Salisbury Road (aspiring dj’s are everywhere, I fear).
Aberdare Hall – Girl, so confusing
It’s so confusing sometimes to be a girl, let alone in an all girls accommodation.
All jokes aside, living with only girls sounds like a dream (a very clean one for that matter). Let’s just hope any beef between housemates can be worked out on the remix?
Cartwright Court – So I
If you have lived in Cartwright Court, how often did you cry? Charli would be crying too if she had to walk that far for her three for 10 VK’s on a Wednesday, or to her 9am’s in JOMEC.
Don’t worry though, because you will be more than familiar with Cathays and Roath by the time you make it to second year.
Clodien House – I think about it all the time
Being a healthcare student, how could you not be thinking about something all the time? You’re in nine to five, five days a week, with endless assignments and placements, living so close to the hospital (which is a massive plus for those working and studying in Heath by the way).
Please don’t take your weekends for granted, you need a break from all that thinking.
Hodge Hall – B2b
You might not want to go back to Hodge Hall after your first year, but the ease of going back and forth between lectures, nights out and Lidl shopping trips will seem like a gift compared to your friends in Taly South, who spend their evenings dragging heavy shopping bags between their fourth floor flat and Tesco.
(Spoiler alert, it takes a long time).
Gordon Hall – Rewind
So, you’ve picked a part-catered experience. I’m sure you just want to rewind back to your parent’s cooking.
At least Gordon Hall residents can come home to a cooked dinner, as opposed to pesto pasta or a pot noodle.
Roy Jenkins Hall – Everything is Romantic
It might not be Capri, but you’ve got to try and romanticise your time at Roy Jenkins Hall.
Although it wasn’t the inspiration for Charli’s songwriting in this case, at least you’re close to the hustle and bustle of the food vendors and many charity shops of Crwys Road, maybe Rhostio will become your local study space.
Private Accommodation – Von Dutch
Just confess it cause it’s obvious, we’ve all been jealous of the rooms in private accommodation. Whether it’s the big windows and views over the city, or the access to a gym in your building, it’s definitely no comparison to the majority of first year accommodation.
They are just living that life.
Anyways, stream Brat.
