Ever wondered what Cardiff’s favourite Christmas song is? Here it is

After heavy debates, group chat arguments and Instagram polls: The results are finally in

Christmas songs are an integral part of the holiday season. They bring friends together, provide conversation starters at the dinner table, and make great choices for Christmas karaoke with your fellow society members, you really can’t escape them (even if you want to).

There seems to be a never-ending stream of Christmas songs, so as you all scramble to make your annual Christmas playlist (that you’ll probably delete again in January, a lovely tradition), we asked the students of Cardiff what their favourite Christmas song was in order to give you all some inspo.

Before we reveal what made the top spot, four songs which we need to give honourable mentions to are  ‘Fairytale of New York‘ by The Pogues, ‘Driving home for Christmas‘ by Chris Rea, ‘Christmas Wrapping‘ by The Waitresses, and ‘One More Sleep‘ by Leona Lewis. Clearly, Cardiff students have a very classic taste when it comes to Christmas.

All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey

Of course, in first place is the Queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey, with the absolute belter that is ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You‘. Listen, we refuse to believe that anyone actually hates this song. As as soon as it comes on, everyone is dancing and singing along while mumbling “this song is so overplayed”, stop the act guys, you all love it.

If anything, the diverse selections of Christmas songs truly encapsulate the unique experience of being a student at Christmas, is ‘All I Want for Christmas is you’ about your ASSL crush of the week? Or about the desire to turn the heating on without fearing bankruptcy?

‘Fairytale of New York’ could be giving the last week of the semester with your flatmates, you’ve cooked your house Christmas dinner in an attempt to be wholesome but you’re actually all permanently hungover, exhausted and sick of seeing each other’s faces. Very festive.

‘Christmas Wrapping’, well, the lyric ‘because all this year’s been a busy blur, don’t think I have the energy’ says it all, doesn’t it? ‘Driving home for Christmas’ is pretty self-explanatory, as is ‘One More Sleep’.

At the end of the day, you won’t be alone in your choice of favourite festive song even if it wasn’t mentioned in our top five. Whatever is on your Christmas playlist, we hope it gets you in the festive spirit and briefly takes your mind off those after Christmas exams.
