Supposed leaked document reveals Wales ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdown will commence next Friday

The letter states that this will ‘take us back to the situation in March’

After much speculation regarding a ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdown in Wales, a letter has supposedly been leaked revealing that this will come into effect at 6pm Friday the 23rd of October and last until 12am on Monday the 9th of November.

Due to be officially announced on Monday, the leaked document from the Wales Director of Passenger Transport, John Pocket, reveals that this lockdown will repeat the situation in March when “all but essential retail outlets were open – pubs, cafes, restaurants, hairdressers etc. – will all be closed”.

The letter discusses primary schools perhaps being allowed to remain open, but suggests that secondary schools may be closed. The letter also covers public transport and states that the Government is “yet to decide” what level of service should be allowed to run over the proposed sixteen day period.

This type of  lockdown has been discussed in Government as cases in Wales have risen steadily over the past few weeks. First Minister, Mark Drakeford, has stated that a “fire break lockdown” could “turn back the clock” and “slowing down its spread” with the R rate in Wales currently sitting at 1.4.

However, some Twitter users have noted spelling errors within the document and the term “3 week lockdown” when the proposed length of the lockdown is just sixteen days. This has many questioning the legitimacy of the document:

The Cardiff Tab reached out to Cardiff University to see what this could mean for students. A Cardiff Spokesperson said, “We don’t comment on speculation however we do keep the situation under constant review and plan for all scenarios.”

The official announcement regarding this ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdown is expected from Mark Drakeford on Monday.
