Cardiff University student dies climbing Ben Nevis

He was a member of the mountaineering society

A 21-year-old student from Cardiff University has died while climbing Scottish peak Ben Nevis, the United Kingdom's highest mountain.

The unnamed climber, and a second man, were climbing the Tower Gully area of the mountain, when they both fell 1600 feet. Miraculously, the fellow climber survived with only minor injuries.

The victim is said to have been a member of Cardiff University's mountaineering society.

A statement issued by the university read: "We are aware of the tragic death of a Cardiff University student over the weekend.

"The next of kin have been notified and we continue to liaise closely with our students' union colleagues.

"Our immediate thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends. Advice and support is available to anyone touched by this event."
