Joanna Natasegara, a graduate from Cardiff University, won an Oscar last night for producing Netflix documentary ‘The White Helmets’.

The documentary follows a group of rescue workers who undertake the dangerous task of helping civilians in the Syrian civil war.

Joanna graduated from Cardiff in 2003, with a BA in Religious and Theological Studies.

She and Orlando von Einsiedel, the director of the documentary, were the only British winners at the 2017 Oscars.

When speaking of the rescue workers, Joanna said: “The whole situation is bitter-sweet. We wish we’d never had to make this film. We wish we didn’t have to be here tonight with this award.

“But we do and so we are pleased that at least they get the recognition that they deserve.”
