Tributes paid to Cardiff University student who died in Physics and Engineering building

Investigation has been ongoing since February 18


An open verdict has been reached in relation to a student’s death inside Cardiff University’s Queen’s Buildings.

On the morning of February 18 Haakon Bloomfield, an astrophysics student, died inside Cardiff University’s Queen’s Building.

CCTV showed him walking to university but there was no footage from inside the building.

Coroner Christopher Woolley reached an open verdict into the death of the 19-year-old and said he “had a loving family”.

A Cardiff University spokesperson commented: “Our sympathy and thoughts are with the student’s immediate family and friends at this difficult time. Support is open to students who may have been affected by this tragic incident.”

“The University’s Student Support Centre and Staff Counselling Service are available to provide support to anyone requiring it, as is the support of the multi-faith chaplaincy.”
