‘I thought I was going to be crushed’

Queue chaos at Halloween Flux

Students were left outraged as there was carnage in the queue for Flux’s Halloween event, resulting in many ticket holders being rejected from entering Y Plas.

The event had completely sold out online, with those without tickets being told that there would be 500 tickets on the door from 10pm.

Non-ticket holders were queuing down Park Place, while ticket holders were being asked to queue at the front of the steps outside the Students’ Union.

Those queuing said there were no barriers in place to organise the queues and only three Showsec staff were seen present, having little to no control over the crowds.

In particular, the ticketed queue was reported to be absolute chaos, with many eager party-goers turning to social media to vent their frustration.

Flux had reportedly already reached capacity for non-ticketed entrants by 11pm, while many other people with tickets were still due to arrive.

Ellie, a second year, said : “I had to leave because I genuinely thought I was going to be crushed.”

The situation got so bad that bouncers were forced to call the police, who arrived and began sending people home, including those who had tickets.

They told people they had to leave for their own safety.

An emergency meeting between police and event organisers was held at around 1am.

Cardiff Students’ Union and the Flux team issued a joint statement which said: “Following Saturday’s Halloween-Flux club night both the Students’ Union and Flux promotions team would like to sincerely apologise for issues experienced by many of you particularly relating to the queues on arrival.

“The perception that there was only limited availability for entry on the door of this week’s event caused an unprecedented early attendance by a few hundred students eager to secure a ticket with people arriving from 21.30.

“Unfortunately Y Plas does not open until 22.00 and before this time there are no security staff on duty.

“By way of apology, the Flux team are honouring any tickets that were unused as valid for next week’s event and are offering a 50% discount on all other tickets bought in advance of next Saturday’s club night.

“Similarly the Students’ Union will be offering a vast range of bar discounts via its loyalty app, Yoyo Wallet.”
