‘I decided to bring my camera to document the far-reaching effects of the Russian attack on Ukraine and to show the united people’

CN: Discussion of the situation in Ukraine

The Cambridge University Ukrainian Society have held peaceful solidarity protests in the light of the current events on Kings Parade, on Thursday (24/02) and Friday (25/02) of this week. They asked for concerned students and residents to join them in a “peaceful spontaneous meeting to support each other and stand together.”

Tobia Nava, a third-year student of the University attended and photographed Thursday’s gathering. He said that “the protest was unexpectedly large, and people from every nationality were there and standing in the cold to show solidarity for those who have family and friends in Ukraine. It was a quiet protest, but the silence and bewildered faces showed how imprinting this day was for everyone. I decided to bring my camera to document the far-reaching effects of the Russian attack on Ukraine and to show the united people.”

Anonymous quotes from the protest are interspersed with Tobia’s work.

“Everyday has become a struggle. We need immediate action now.”

“Most of my friends are in bomb shelters as we speak.”

“We are here to protect the freedoms of our countries, of our native cities.”

“This isn’t an attack on Ukraine, it’s an attack on Europe.”

“We don’t want to be refugees, we just want to be safe in our homes.”

“Do not be ignorant, do not be complacent, do not be silent. Stand for democracy.”

“Russian military, go f*ck yourself.”

The Cambridge University Students Union have also posted a statement and suggested that anyone who needs “personal support or advice, as always get in touch with our team of specialist advisors at the Students Advice Service for free and impartial support by emailing [email protected]
