The History Faculty is hiring a lecturer in the field of Black British History

The faculty state that they ‘particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BME background’

The Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge has announced that they are hiring in the field of Black British History.

The position will be a lectureship that is scheduled to begin in October this year and will also entail graduate supervisions.

According to the job advertisement, a successful candidate would be “an expert in the histories of people of Black British, Caribbean and/or African identity and descent in any period of British history since 1780.”

The advertisement also highlights: “We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our Faculty.”

The announcement comes after many institutions have been driving for greater representation of the BAME community at Cambridge. Objectives such as Target Oxbridge have been successfully increasing representation of BAME students in the university since 2012, helping 37 Black students gain places at Cambridge in the 2020-21 application cycle.

The Faculty told the Tab Cambridge that they are “very pleased to be in a position to make an appointment to the Faculty of History in this field.”

A first-year History student also told The Tab: “I think it’s great that the Faculty is hiring in this field. It is a really interesting period of history and I think it’s important that it is taught to students.

It is also a great step forward in diversifying the Faculty and boosting representation for ethnic minorities. It will surely make the Faculty a more inclusive and welcoming place for all.”

The Faculty of History has been contacted for comment.
