Cambridge will move into Tier 2 restrictions once the lockdown is lifted

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will both be moving into Tier 2 on 2nd December

Cambridgeshire is to move into Tier 2 national restrictions from 2nd December, according to a government announcement this morning.

The gov.uk website now shows that areas under Cambridge city council will be in Tier 2, meaning “high alert”, once the lockdown is lifted. This follows news that coronavirus cases in Cambridgeshire have been rising to increased levels. Last week, the county saw its highest infection rate since the start of the pandemic.

These new restrictions include Cambridge, Huntingdonshire, East Cambridgeshire, South Cambridgeshire, and Fenland. Peterborough is also set to join Cambridgeshire in Tier 2 come the 2nd.

What are tier 2 restrictions?

The gov.uk website states that Tier 2 restrictions are as follows: You must not socialise with anyone indoors who is not in your household or support bubble; ‘The rule of six’ means that you must not socialise with more than six people outdoors; pubs and bars must close unless operating as restaurants; hospitality businesses must close at 11pm (this includes cinemas, theatres, and bowling alleys, although cinemas and theatres may remain open to conclude showings that started before 10pm) and organised outdoor sport can continue but organised indoor sport can only do so if people will not be socialising with people they do not live with (or share a support bubble with).

The government also outlines rules about weddings, funerals and other events, as well as further information about businesses and places of worship.

MP for Cambridge Daniel Zeichner has said, following the announcement: “The threat from the virus remains very real and it will be important that everyone in the city takes care to protect one another.

“Now we know the additional restrictions to protect public health, it is important that the government provides an appropriate package alongside to provide economic support, I know there are many Cambridge pubs, bars and restaurants who are desperately worried as we enter the crucial Christmas period.”
