BBC Radio 4 have jumped the gun and are celebrating the 40th anniversary of 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' airing on our radios. Sure they could have waited two years and it would have been shown on the 42nd anniversary and therefore probably given us new information about the very fabric of the universe, but then we'd have to wait.

And after all, who on earth would want to wait for an adaptation with a cameo from Professor Stephen Hawking? Hawking's been typecast as The Guide Mk.II, a role described on the fan wiki page (a trustworthy source) as having 'infallible prescient deduction abilities'. There's nobody who could be more suited to the role. Well, except for the fact that his character may have earth destroying tendencies- a trait we hope the professor and his on-air persona do not share.

Those equations may look complicated but the answer is just 42

The Producer, David Morley discovered that the Professor was a huge fan of Hitchhiker's and was keen to see the script. After seeing it, he quickly responded with a resounding "yes'' to the role.

Professor Hawking will join the original cast for the six-part series which will showcase old and unpublished materials from Douglas Adams.

'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Hexagonal Phase' will premier on March 8th at 6:30pm on BBC Radio 4 and will continue weekly for 6 episodes.

The Tab has approached Stephen Hawking for comment.
