Not exactly A-don-is. Don sculpture fails to impress

Cambridge city council have rejected a bid for the erection of a 13 foot statue of a university don.

Cambridge gredley hill road nadine black scuplture The Don

Costing a whopping £150,000, the artwork was to intended to stand outside a proposed office block in Hill Road.

Nadine Black, the city council’s public art officer, described the statue as “not of the best quality” and also argued that it had “no relationship to this site.”

Imagine a supervision with this guy

Even the sculptor, world renowned Uruguayan Pablo Atchugarry, appeared unimpressed with his own work and denied being the artist responsible.

He insisted, “I am not the author of this sculpture, and it is an abuse that they had used my name.”

“I wish somebody would apologise to me for this misunderstanding”.

However, Bill Gredley, the chairmen of Unex Group who developed the piece, staunchly defended the work and described it as a “spectacular piece of art”.

A spokesman for Unex group added:

“Mr Gredley and others consider it is a rather spectacular bronze with a difference, namely the head and shape as cast together with the bronze being coloured black to resemble the academic clothing and mortarboard.”

“Mr Gredley appreciates that art is subjective and therefore has no issue with those who do not like The Don.”

Naming the statue with a term from the other place probably wasn’t wise

Cambridge students also seem unimpressed by the proposed artwork, with one student likening it to “a dementor”, whilst another thought the statue’s face reminded them of “an elephants trunk.”

For now it seems Hill Road is unlikely to don this new statue.
