After a number of years without a permanent home it appears the Varsity football match will be returning to Craven Cottage. Fulham, apparently keen to recapture some of the tradition inherent in Oxford’s annual schooling by Cambridge, are described as being in advanced negotiations over hosting the event on the banks of the Thames on the morning of the Boat Race.

The Cottage

Following the move away from Wembley in 1988, the match was held at Craven Cottage almost every year up until 2009 when it began four years of exile. Over the last four years the match has moved around various disreputable locations including Crystal Palace and Oxford, and the dark blues will be hopeful that a return to the finery of West London could have a positive impact upon their recent poor record.

With Oxford having been taken to pieces by a Rich Totten hat-trick last year at Selhurst Park and sitting bottom of the BUCS division below Cambridge the Varsity match is in danger of becoming something of a formality, but this season’s match nonetheless promises to be an entertaining spectacle in wonderful surroundings.
