The First & Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball

20th June 2011, £150

Trinity sets an incredibly high standard for itself. Champagne, oysters and fireworks are all a given. The challenge is to create wow factor on top of this. And Trinity truly excelled themselves.

Food was of excellent quality. The usual ball hits of fajitas, burgers, popcorn and doughnuts were joined by some delectable touches: dainty macaroons, handmade chocolate truffles and the oysters for which Trinity is famous.

There were some issues with queuing, the original queue to enter lasted about an hour and the teeming mass into which the queue for cheese and port descended can only be described as chaotic. Turns out drunk posh people really love their cheese and will kill to get it. That said, as the night progressed queues calmed down, as people seemed to disperse to the large variety of entertainment, food and drink.

The headliners Cascada were good fun. Bursting onto stage with a posse of dancers whose signature move was to punch the air vigorously and joyfully, Cascada roused the crowd with a selection of well-known hits. Booty Luv were also a surprising hit, one girl down but still giving an energetic performance and happily admitting to the crowd, “I have no idea what song is coming next, so let’s just go with it”.

Jazz bands were also well chosen. The Ellafunks played a good set, and Top Shelf Jazz played their lively brand of ‘prohibition jazz’.

Dodgems and a chair-o-plane provided fairground style entertainment. As I’m a big fan of anything that remotely resembles flying, this was great.

The whole ball was decorated simply but effectively, taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings with well placed lighting to highlight the architecture.

Finally the highlight had to be the fireworks. I simply say that they were completely magical.
