It has been expected that the couple would be awarded the Cambridge title for a while. Queen Liz heightened speculation when she popped into John’s for tea this week.
It is thought that WillCat gained the title due to Cambridge’s links with the royals, and its international reputation.
Tradition dictates that the royal men receive titles on their wedding days, which are chosen and bestowed by the Queen to mark their marriages. Although dukedom is the highest rank it the British peerage, it does mean that Kate is not officially a princess.
The full palace statement, which was released three hours before the wedding, said: “The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.
“Prince William thus becomes His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge and Miss Catherine Middleton on marriage will become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge.”
Explaining the slight confusion, a palace spokesman told The Guardian: “She is not a princess in her own right. That title has not been conferred on her. Her title is that of duchess. So she is not Princess Catherine. And to call her Princess William of Wales is misleading.”

The couple’s new title is thought to be especially appropriate, since the last Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, a grandson of George III, also married a commoner for love.
George married actor Sarah Louisa Fairbrother in 1847, whilst she was pregnant with his third child. However, Queen Victoria never formally recognised George’s marriage.

Students are very excited by the news. Emily Guest, a second year vet med student from Girton said: “I heard the news this morning, and am very excited. They had better make a visit!”
Lucy Urwin, a second year philosophy student from Magdalene added: “I thought I had Will and Kate fever BEFORE I heard this news. I don’t think I have ever, ever, EVER been this excited in my life.”
A University spokesman said: “The University warmly welcomes the creation of the Dukedom of Cambridge.”
