RON Smashed At Union

Friday night was a miserable one for RON at the Union Elections, but not for all. The Tab gets reaction from the winners.

2011 was not to be the year for RON to finally rise to power at the Union, as Calum Macdonald comfortably won the battle to be the Union President for Michaelmas term.

After the shock pull out of rival candidate Julian Parmar less than 48 hours before the election, Macdonald, a Downing 2nd year lawyer, eased past the plucky RON to win the race for presidency.

Macdonald praised RON for a “decent performance,” adding: “nobody wants to see an uncontested race.” Despite this, the new President-Elect was thrilled with the new challenge and celebrated well, telling The Tab: “I can’t really remember all of [Friday night]. There were a lot of drinks.”

Elsewhere, RON was also defeated by Akilah Jeffers for the role of Ents Officer. Jeffers could not hide her delight, commenting: “I’m really excited. I’m really keen to bring back popular events, and am seriously considering bringing back pole fitness classes!”

The Girtonian will take her place alongside Tomas Kesek, a Medicine Student who beat off stiff competition from Ben Kentish and Angus Morrison (and of course RON) to become the new Executive Officer. Kesek’s victory saw him “jump up and down like a child,” and he told The Tab that he is looking forward to: “getting to corrupt young freshers’ minds.”

Emma student Sophie Odenthal will be Michaelmas Speaker’s Officer, after beating rival Arrash Yassaee in an extremely tight contest. The candidates had both ordered investigations into each other’s manifesto over the course of the campaign.

And David Leigh’s campaign promises of Gardies, Cindies, and Fez discounts saw him pip Sebastian Salek and Duncan Evans to the role of Treasurer-Elect.
