Cambridge University has been plunged into chaos this week as hundreds of students and examiners are trapped abroad by the infamous volcanic ash cloud.

MML has already been forced to postpone oral examinations with both undergraduates and staff left stranded by the ban on air travel.

A stranded student hits the books

Over 200 students received an emergency email on Friday, warning them of the impending disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano.

With examinations timetabled for this Monday and Tuesday, the faculty board has had to concede that even exams are not above nature’s laws.

Francesca Hill, Tit Hall explained: "My French teacher is still stuck on the continent, and several of my friends".

However, some students are going to extreme lengths to make it back for the start of term.

Emma Williams from Sidney Sussex is apparently travelling over-land from Bulgaria, driving to Slovakia then catching a coach back to Blighty.

The University was unavailable for comment on the prospect of European flights remaining grounded, although the disruption caused cannot help but raise the stress levels in an already taxing term.

One student, who asked to remain anonymous, had this to say: "First our banks and now our holidays, why has Iceland got it in for us? All they seem to export is misery and ash."

It must be noted, however, that no link has yet been found between the collapse of Iceland’s finances and this latest disaster.

With the EU meeting this Monday to consider emergency measures, it has even been suggested by the government that the Royal Navy may be used to transport Brits home.
