St Catz  1  –  Jesus 7 St. Catz 1st XI were victims of a 7-1 drubbing today as Jesus took ample revenge for their defeat in last years Cuppers final. The game, long described as a ‘grudge match’ for the Jesus team after thier lost on penalties last year, was the only top flight league game this weekend as both teams had byes in Cuppers After 10 minutes Jesus made their intentions clear, Aki Laakso rounding the keeper to put the visitors 0-1 up. Mid-way through the half James Loxam’s shot from a tight angle was helped into the net by a Catz defender to make the score 0-2, increased futher by Andy Caines near post goal on the stroke of half-time. After the break Jesus’ superior pace up-front continued to be too much for their opposition, Laakso slotting home his 2nd of the game in the 60th minute, followed shortly after by a 2nd for Loxam to make the score 0-5. Jesus remained comfortable in possession, their slick movement often winning out over Catz’ long-ball approach, with Blues players James Day, Michael Johnson and Dan Gwyther providing an extra degree of quality on the ball. The visitors’ keeper Chris Ellis had little to do all game. Only after both Laakso and Loxam had completed their hatricks in the final 5 minutes did Catz get a consolation goal from long-range leaving the final score at 1-7. The emphatic victory for Jesus against last year’s Cuppers winners in their game in hand moves them up towards the top of the league and represents a forceful statement of intent from a team who will hope to be in contention at the end of the year.
