Jesus have laid down a marker by winning the first race of the year on the Cam, the Autumn Head.

Their coxed four completed the course in 10 minutes 5 seconds, 7 seconds faster
than Fitzwilliam. Trinity, John’s and Magdalene were the next three college
boats.
The Autumn Head is the first test of the season for the colleges, many of whom
will train in Fours until the University Fours race before switching to Eights
for the famous Fairbairns competition in December.
Jesus, who finished last year 3rd on the River in Mays, ahead of John’s but
behind Trinity and Cauis, will be among the contenders to win Fairbairns, a
competition founded by their legendary coach Steve Fairbairn.
Downing were the only major rowing college not to enter the Autumn Head, having
flown to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta. Some colleges also entered Eights into the Autumn Head, with Queens’ going
fastest ahead of King’s and Trinity.
Next weekend sees many of the college boats clash again at the Huntingdon
Regatta.
