There was a chemical spill in Sinclair today

Police and Fire crews shut down the whole building

Sinclair building on the Gypsy Lane Campus has been evacuated due to a ‘chemical spill’ in the Biochemistry teaching labs.

The entire 3rd floor of the building was evacuated before Police and Fire crews wearing protective suits shut down the whole building. Specialised equipment, which appeared to be for ventilation, also appeared.

The main entrance was shut down just after midday.

Five people were directly involved in the incident in a bio chem fume lab. Students have received an email clarifying that nobody was harmed and Sinclair will be open again in 2-3 hours. There appears to be no damage done to the current renovations happening in Sinclair.

The exact cause of the incident is unknown, but the practical scheduled for second years later in the day involved Western Blotting, which uses several potentially dangerous chemicals and pieces of equipment.
