Food you have to eat in Oxford this summer

Where else can you get a jacket potato after a night out

For all those of you blessed with being born in Oxford, it’s easy to take what we’ve had for granted. The impressive architecture, the beautiful scenery and the cities extensive history.

But more importantly, we’ve got some really good places to eat. Sure, it isn’t a place known for it’s food – but maybe if there wasn’t so much else going on it would be.

Cheesy chips at Kebab Kid, a Mama Mia Pizza or Moo Moo’s shake – there’s certain places you just can’t find anywhere else, and here they are:

A burrito from Mission Burrito

Anyone who’s lived in Oxford will be familiar with Mission, who serve some of the juiciest Burrito’s in the world.

Pizza and a beer from The White Rabbit

Good, simple food and a really fun place to go for drinks too.

An Oreo milkshake from Moo Moo’s

There’s only two problem’s with Moo Moo’s:

  1. There are too many flavours to choose from
  2. The milkshakes are so nice that you struggle to enjoy one anywhere else

Or anything from the Covered Market, actually

Fasta Pasta, that Brazillian Cheese Ball place, the cake shop, Ben’s Cookies, the fresh fish, meat or fruit – The Covered Market is food heaven.

Pizza from Mamma Mia

The place where you probably went for twenty eight peoples birthday in one year – it’s hard to rival the pastas and pizza’s here. And you can sit outside.

A baguette from Taylors

A prime lunch-time spot for anyone at OHS, Cherwell, D’Overbroecks or Teddies – the family owned company have eight deli’s across the city. Known for it’s baguettes, you’ll be spending hours at the front of the queue deciding what to chose. But you should go for the chicken pesto mayo.

A huge ass tub of ice cream from G&D’s

You’ll never forget the guy who’s job was to walk around in a giant cow suit.

Pad Thai from Chiang Mai Kitchen, The High Street

Hidden in a tiny little alleyway, it’s just as cute inside too. Probably the best Thai restaurant in Oxford, evident from all the Thai people who eat there.

Eggs benedict from Jacob’s Inn, Wolvercote

Like a big warm hug. It’s fifteen minutes outside the city centre but you feel like you’re in the countryside and the food is delicious. The owners are great, and have two pigmy goats and a french bulldog puppy that roam freely.

Lamb Passanda from Tiffins Tandoori, Abingdon and Kidlington

Voted a top ten restaurant by BBC Oxford, and also in The Oxford Mail’s best places to eat, there’s no where quite like Tiffins.

A Roast from The Anchor, Jericho

The Anchor is somewhere you want your parents to take you on a Sunday. Good food, a lot of healthy options and a homely atmosphere. Run by the same people who own The Crown, The Duke of Cambridge and The House, it also does some pretty good cocktails. Get the Espresso Martini and home-baked cookies for after.

A falafel from Falafel House, Gloucester Green

https://www.instagram.com/p/-JfBeqARwQ/?tagged=falafelhouse

The biggest, fullest, tastiest falafel in the UK, and really cheap too. Taste just as good at 12pm as they do at 3am.

Tapas from the Kazbar

What other restaurant lets you sit on the floor?

Something annoyingly healthy from The Modern Baker, Banbury Road

Quinoa, Spirulina, Matcha, Chia, Boabab – any superfood you can’t pronounce they will sell. And it actually takes surprisingly delicious. New to Summertown, the shop sells supplies as well as guilt-free cakes, salads, yoghurts, bread and smoothies. The best place in Oxford for anything healthy or gluten/dairy/sugar/fat/wheat free.

Free fudge from Oxford Fudge Kitchen

You’ve probably got more free testers from this place than you’ve paid for.

A Kebab from Kebab Kid, Gloucester Green

Not one to brave during the daytime, but there’s nothing better than some post-night out food from Gloucester Green.

Or a jacket potato from one of the kebab vans

Why is this so hard to find anywhere else?

A shawarma from LB’s, Summertown

Something really fancy from Brasserie Blanc, Jericho

Beautiful French restaurant just outside the city centre. The menu was devised by Raymond Blanc, and every single thing on it is inexplicably delicious. Good place to go for a second date.

Right in the centre of Summertown, this deli does some of the best food in Oxford for a really good price. Get the Chicken Shawarma with chilli and garlic, and a box full of all the pastries too. Also, hummus.

Steak from Gee’s, Banbury Road

The all-glass walls make it the best place to go in the summer.

Bruschetta from The Bell Inn, Hampton Poyle

The poshest pub around.
