Brookes try out the university’s Print Anywhere Service

You can print from your bed

Beginning in the first few weeks of February, Brookes are testing the university’s Print Anywhere Service across a number of pilot sites including Gipsy Lane.

Being just about the only good thing to come out of Brookes SU, students in the John Henry Brookes building will be able to print from their own laptops, tablets or phones. Yep, you can print your dissertation from your phone, in bed, and pick it up later.

Previously, students could only print if they were able to find a free university computer, which was almost impossible as the library is always so packed. There was not a sufficient ratio of computers to printers and work would take so long to print out, it would just get lost. But, students and staff can now print easily and on the go.

So far the printers in the John Henry Brooke’s building have been replaced with Canon multifunctional devices which can print, copy as well as scan.

Brooke’s Print Anywhere Service uses “pull printing” technology whereby a user’s print job is held centrally in a secure location until it is released from the queue by the user, to the printer of his or her choosing.

Each students’ personal disk chip will also ensure their print job is secure. So, there is no risk of work flying about or someone pinching your assignment from a printer.

Depending on the scheme’s success, the Print Anywhere service will be available to the wider University and all campuses later in the academic year.
