Why Brookes should be your first choice

Cowley Road and Fuzzys is all you need in life

Why are you kidding yourself that anywhere else is better?

There will always be competition when it comes down to choosing which university is best. Whether you’re in it for the degree or the all round student experience, this is why Oxford Brookes should be your number one choice.

Cowley is the funnest area in Oxford

Being at Brookes means you’ll probably end up in one of the busiest student areas in Oxford. Just a short journey from Crescent or Paul Kent halls, students in Headington have to make the long trip down the hill to reach the mecca of Cowley road. There’s so many places to eat, drink, shop and go out. Ranging from your typical takeaways to specialist delicatessens, Cowley offers so much more than your average night in with a beer and a curry. Featuring Italian and Greek tavernas as well as multiple sushi bars, Cowley clearly accommodates for the finer things in life.

Whether you have deadlines or not, anyone who’s anyone will be seen in Cowley on a Friday or Saturday night. With a variety of bars, restaurants and pubs, Cowley is the perfect place to start a night out. Only a five minute walk into the centre of town, prime location for that one guy who will always moan about paying for a cab.

We’ve got Fuzzy Ducks

Fuzzies is one of Brookes’ most popular nights out. With cheap drinks and a DJ who actually knows what they’re doing, every Wednesday night Fuzzies is held at Wahoo. Home to many of the Brookes Sport society socials, Fuzzies is pretty popular amongst students of all ages. The rugby boys even have their own corner on the bottom floor. Fuzzies is famous as being one of the messier nights out. If you’re not a fan of a dressy night, then Fuzzies is the place were flats are acceptable. No Topshop heels here please.

We’re academically impressive

Sure, we’re not Oxford, but we’re in the top 500 unis in the world.

Oxford is famous

Being a Brookes student allows you to soak up the high life of Oxford without actually being at proper Oxford uni. With castle-like buildings and picturesque courtyards, if you become a student at Brookes, you’ll be studying in a real life movie set.

Oxford is home to many well-known movie sets such as X-Men and Harry Potter. Fresher Dan Thomas even saw motor enthusiast Jeremy Clarkson travelling through Cowley. Known to live on the outskirts of the city.

MNB

As well as being home to Fuzzy Ducks, anyone who’s anyone goes to Monday Night Bridge. Despite being controversial due to its slightly smaller-than-average dance floor, Bridge is known as one of the better nights out in Oxford. With a Anuba attached and multiple floors, Bridge features just about every type of music ranging from the Cheesy Charts to Electro-RnB.

Gipsy Lane campus

Although we haven’t got as many students as some bigger unis, our campuses are just as great. Brookes is ultimately a modern university. The newly refurbished Abercrombie and John Henry Brookes (JHB) buildings at Gipsy Lane campus have been university’s biggest projects and have won lots of awards.

As well as being presented the Royal Institute of British Architects award, the site also plays host to countless dissertation and masters students in the basement who haven’t moved form their spot all year. With a 24-hour library based throughout the building itself, we can take a break by heading to the Starbucks and cafe area, as well ping-pong tables. It’s not a surprise that it also won in the Student Experience category of the 2014 Education Estates Awards.

Our freshers’ week is better

Brookes offer freshers either the Mega or Monster ticket that will allow them access to pretty much every venue throughout the busy first week.

There are so many nights out to go to you’ll be spoilt for choice. Although this choice can get tricky when half your mates what to go to Wahoo and the other half want to go to Bridge.

At the end of freshers week, Brookes Freshers Ball allows you to get fully suited and booted for a night of booze fuelled fun. Featuring flame throwers and photo booth courtesy of The Tab, the ball is a great way to get to know your housemates. Who cares if you’ve only known each other for less than a week you’re obvs going to be BBFs.

Brookes freshers ball is definitely not to be missed

Purple Turtle

If you’re that person in the group who doesn’t enjoy clubbing but still wants a to reap the rewards of a good night out, then Purple Turtle’s your place to go.  Purple Turtle is the place where just about anything goes. As long as you’re not too tall this is the place to be.

There’s no better way to end a night than with a Kebab Kid

Gracing our streets with fast food until the early hours, like any city that’s worth anything, Oxford is home to the one and only Kebab Kid.  With its wise cracking owner and cheese chips sent from heaven there is no better way to end the night. You’ll probably see more people and have more memories in here than you did on your night out.

Our sports teams are better

Brookes sport societies have all had their fare share of success. The first rugby team beat rivals at Nottingham Trent and Leicester University during October last year and even the University of Northampton in November. Not bad. Brookes rowing team also led their way to fame with team mates Jamie Copus and Joel Cassells bagging a silver medal in the World Under 23 Championships in Bulgaria.

Winner, Winner, Chicken dinner
