Crescent catastrophe: Halls evacuated following kitchen fire

72 freshers were evacuated and one was injured following an accidental kitchen fire

Last night at around 6.30pm, Crescent Hall was evacuated due to a first year student leaving his cooking unattended.

It is believed that the student left his pan on the heat unattended causing it to catch fire and fill the ground floor kitchen, rooms and stairs with thick smoke.

The flames were so high that the roof above the kitchen caught fire and caused extensive damage.

The student involved became aware of what was happening and tried to put the blaze out himself, resulting in hospital treatment for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
About 72 others in Crescent Hall had already been evacuated.

In a statement Brookes Union said:  “Yesterday evening a fire started in a student kitchen at Crescent Halls of Residence.

“The Fire and Rescue Service was called and put the fire out.  No students were seriously injured, but one was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.”

I don’t think ‘Alex’ will be cooking for while after this.
