Students Predict Uncertain Future

Survey reveals that students expect to fill in over 20 applications before securing their first job.

Figures released by YouGov reveal that university students expect to fill out 24 job applications before securing a role when they graduate.

The YouGov survey of around 744 British 16 to 24-year-olds reveals the expectations of today’s young people in the current job market.

The report found that sixth form students expect to fill out 17 applications compared to university students, who anticipate applying for 24 jobs before landing a role.

The survey also questioned participants on their potential salaries. On average, university students believed that the earnings in their first role would total £20,250. The ever optimistic sixth formers estimated their pay packet to be £23,000.

James McCoy, Research Director at YouGov, said “Although the economy is showing signs of recovery, young people feel that they face an extremely tough employment situation.”

“Most see finding employment as hard work, and the number of applications they expect to fill out is testament to that.”
