Brookes students forced to live in hotel after building blunder

40 Brookes students have been forced to spend their first few weeks in a Holiday Inn hotel after new student accommodation in Chapel Street failed to open in time.

Despite their stay being fully funded by the university, students face an hour walk or twenty minute bus ride to the Gipsy Lane campus from their temporary base next to the Kassam Stadium.

Brookes have provided a shuttle bus for the displaced students and a warden on site to help.

This news comes on top of the revelation that 200 were left without halls after results and clearing, 50 of whom had selected the university as their first choice.

Local letting agents also reported a rise in the number of students who missed out on places looking for last minute accommodation.

Brookes has blamed the situation on the university’s increasing popularity amongst undergraduate applicants.

Crowded: At least there’s room at the Inn

SU president Joel Holmes told the BBC: “People were reporting a shortage of houses in the city, but it was purely just a slower process than normal trying to allocate places in halls.

“After a week, only one of the first choice students was without a place. To my knowledge, there is not a student without a place in either the private or university sector.”
