Angry UH residents discover they’re paying nearly £200 more than next year’s freshers

And their rent is £500 more than last year’s too

Furious University Hall residents are demanding answers after learning that they are being asked to pay almost £200 more in rent than next year’s residents.

The Tab has learned freshers arriving at UH in September this year will only have to pay £102.34 per week, over £7 less than the amount paid by current residents.

Over the course of the year, this difference in rent adds up to nearly £200.

To add insult to injury, this year’s residents are also paying approximately £500 more than last year’s freshers, who were charged close to £96 per week for their 42 week tenancy.

Resident Matthew Soames started a petition to ask for hall staff to provide an answer for the fluctuation in rent. He says residents are particularly angry because there has been a negligible improvement on the buildings from last year and there is no clear reason for why there will be a price drop next year.

One of the few improvements made this year has been to install new kitchens in one of the blocks of flats. However, this improvement has obviously only benefited a minority of residents.

At the time of writing, 175 residents have signed the petition asking for answers. Residents who spoke to The Tab expressed dissatisfaction with the hall, citing issues such as flooding showers, toilets that don’t flush and table legs that easily break. All for the cost of nearly £4,500 per year.

Matt, of Flat 18 said: “The whole thing stinks. It’s clear to me there’s far too much profit motive and that someone’s forced the drop for next year and the uni hoped none of us would notice this year.”
