‘Hateful’ poster suggesting transgender students are rapists appears on campus

A controversial parody poster has caused outrage on campus for suggesting transgender students are rapists and telling women that “men know better than them”.

The sickening sign tells female students that they shouldn’t worry if they see a man in the women’s toilets and they should “kindly ignore the fact that men including transgender males rape women every nine minutes”.

This has caused huge offense to many feminists and transgender people across the University.

Members of Bristol’s FemSoc have criticised the poster for “essentially trying to link trans women to rapists”.

The hateful parody imitates the design of a sign that was recently put up in every toilet on campus as part of Trans Awareness Week.

The original told students: “If you’re in a public bathroom and you think a stranger’s gender does not match the sign on the door…don’t worry about it, they know better than you”.

The new notice was first spotted outside the toilets in the Wills Memorial Building and was quickly brought to the attention of several SU officers by hundreds of offended students.

Alice Phillips, Equality, Liberation and Access Officer, said on Facebook: “I’m really disgusted by this poster and we’re going to be doing everything we can to find out where this has come from.

“Also I’ve had an email from security services and they are going to be extra vigilant on their patrols and are going to be taking down any posters that they see”.

As yet, nobody has claimed responsibility for the poster.
