Hundreds take over the streets in feminist protest
So much for apathy
It was a cold, rainy Friday night, but that didn’t stop 500 men and women from marching across Bristol for the Reclaim the Night march.
Led by UBU Equality Officer Alice Phillips, hundreds of men, women, students, and locals seized back the streets from misogyny and harassment.
The march was part of an international feminist movement, calling for society to stop thinking it’s acceptable to catcall and verbally abuse women over their appearance.
Armed with posters, banners, whistles and drums, the protesters brought the feminist issues we usually just complain about in private into the public eye, where it really matters.
Starting with a candlelight vigil in Queen’s Square to remember the survivors of rape and sexual abuse, the crowd then marched through the Harbourside and up Park Street.
They finished at the Richmond Building where Alice gave a speech on the need to fight against street harassment and the rape culture it reinforces.
Other speakers from the NUS were also present, along with representatives of sexual abuse charities.
Alice told The Tab she is determined to stage similar marches in the future.
