What’s Bristol listening to this week?

We pride ourselves on being ‘wavey’ but some of us are listening to Ben Howard

Ever notice how many people make their way round campus with headphones in, avoiding the outside world?

We did, and we felt it was a bit anti-social, so we decided to stop people in their tracks and ask them what they were listening to that was so important.

We’d hoped there might have been some pattern to the answers, that we’d learn something profound about our fellow students. But all the experience told us was that apparently Ben Howard is still a thing.

Patrick

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

A proud Swiftie

Tab: “Do you like to shake your booty in clubs?”

Patrick: “Yes. The verb ‘boogie’ is for the old. Shaking it is for the young.”

Eden

Schoolboy Q – Man of the Year

This is what charisma looks like

Tab: “Are you the man of the year, and if so, why?”

Eden: “I certainly am. And a man of the year has to have charisma. Denote this pose.”

Alex

Waterflame – Ricochet Love

Alex has big ideas about how to solve droughts in Africa

Tab: “On the subject of water and flame, how would you solve the crisis of severe droughts in Africa?”

Alex: “There s a chemical that makes clouds condense; then the cloud evaporates into rain.”

T: “Isn’t the problem that there really aren’t many clouds there?”

A: “…”

Becky

Keri Hilson – Knock You Down (ft. Kanye West, Nero)

She hasn’t trod in dog shit today

Tab: “Have you ever had a bad experience of being knocked down?”

Becky: “Yeah – a few weeks ago I fell off my bike, cried the whole way home and then trod in some dog shit.”

Andrew

The Garden of Delight – Death Chant (Are You Still There?)

Black is the new black

Tab: “Are you a gardener, and if so, where is your garden of choice?”

Andrew: “Well Germany would be my garden of delight. And I’d have someone to tend to my own garden; trim it and such.” (No sexual euphemism intended apparently.)

Chloe

Ben Howard – Time is Dancing

A Lady of Lounge

Tab: “Seeing that no one has ever been able to dance to Ben Howard unless someone is holding a knife to their throat, where do you dance and which song would you dance to?”

Chloe: “Lounge of course, and to an old classic, like Mr Brightside. I am a ‘Lady of Lounge’.”

Sam

Haim – Falling

Our question for Sam was particularly tenuous

Tab: “Take the “I” out of Haim, and you get ham. Tell me, if I put a gun to your head and made you choose a favourite meat, would it be ham?”

“To be honest; ham, lettuce and mayo is the best sandwich you can make.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Andros

The Neighbourhood – Afraid

Not afraid of anything…apart from needles and spiders

Tab: “What are you afraid of?”

Andros: “I’m not afraid of anything as such. Then again, needles and spiders are big bugbears of mine.

Tab: “And what would be your ideal neighbourhood to live in?”

Andros: “My favourite neighbourhood would probably be in Paris, in a lukewarm kind of place. What can I say, I love the culture.”

Emma

Ben Howard – Only Love

Emma’s not afraid to say what it takes to win her love

Tab: “How would a man such as Ben Howard theoretically get your only love?”

Emma: “A man can get my love if he cooks me things.”

Tab: “Like a handsome array of meat?”

“I know that’s a euphemism…but yeah, sex.”
