Meet the captains

All of these BNOCs are better at sport than you

GIRLS

Cheerleading

Sasha Evans

Course and year? Economics and Management – 3rd year

Hometown? Coventry

Funniest moment from last year? Getting two guys to take their boxers off for a competition in the middle of the strip in Ibiza.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? We’re super fun and flexible and because we all compete together have a really great bond in terms of cheer – and as friends.

Who are the ones to watch? Hana and Lydia (our new social secs). After Maya and Laura threw some of the Jets best ever socials last year, we are expecting some great themes and big things from these girls.

Regular venues on a social? We’ve got new sponsorship from the White Hart, in addition to another that continues our life-long bond with Lounge. We’re also at sports night most weeks (and Yo Yo Burger if we make it that far).

Hockey

Lucy Balicki

Course and year? English Literature – 3rd Year

Hometown? Canterbury, Kent

Best moment from last year? The best was the 2’s cup win last season.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? We are one of the biggest sports clubs at Bristol. We are a high performance club and also have the biggest socials on Wednesday nights. We were AU Club of the Year 2014.

Who is the one to watch? Lucy Preston – our Scottish international whose shapes in Lounge are as awesome as her goalscoring abilities.

Regular venues on a social? We start at La Rocca on the triangle and then we move on to meet the boys at Bar 48 on Park Street and then onto Bunker sports night.

Lacrosse

Poppy Ralph

Course and year? Zoology – 3rd year

Hometown? A tiny village called Horsley in Gloucestershire

Best moment from last year? Current social sec Alice Berry getting it wrong on a Wednesday and turning up dressed as an (admittedly excellent) prawn to what was meant to be a chess-themed social.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? Constant dedication as shown by the fact freshers turned up to training in a taxi when no one was sober enough to drive. Also, getting socials right every week.

Who are the ones to watch? The “Downe House Duo” of Lucy Lukic and fresher Ellie Hillier. Lucy displays strong performances both on and off the pitch, and I’m waiting to see if Ellie follows suit on the social scene.

Regular venue on a social? Bunker medical room.

Sailing

Emma Spruce

Course and year? Geography – 2nd year

Hometown? Hill Head, Fareham

Funniest moment from last year? I’m not sure many of the funniest moments can be repeated (especially in public) but a nice little moment was when Issy Turiff accidentally dropped a teammates’ iPhone into the depths of Chew Valley Lake… while being on the same boat as said individual.

The true talent however was managing to hide that she’d done it for at least an hour even though everyone else on shore knew what had happened via the radio.

What makes you the best club in Bristol?  Everyone is really chilled and friendly and you don’t have to get up at 5am to train.  It’s also a fantastic excuse to go to Garam Masala and Lounge.

Who is the one to watch? Sailing-wise the field is pretty open, but at social you always have to keep an eye on Molly Frost, Raffy Quinton or Abbie Page (lightweights).

Regular venues on a social? Lizard Lounge will forever be the home of UBSC. Sometimes we venture to Bunker but only to stand awkwardly in the corner.

Rowing

Course and year? Geography – 3rd year

Hometown? Nottingham.

Funniest moment from last year? In our novice year we were told it was impossible to capsize an eight. Three weeks in and we did just that…the River Avon is a very cold place.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? We’ve got a great mix of people – it’s always a laugh. This is also the first time the women’s squad have a professional coach so hopefully it’ll be a good year!

Who is the one to watch? The club captain – Steph – after a few gin and tonics…

Regular venues on a social? Bunker and of course a bit of Lounge.

BOYS

Rugby

David Watchorn

Course and Year? Medicine – 3rd year (currently intercalating in Physiology)

Hometown? Newcastle

Most memorable moment from last year?  For me it was the spear tackle that led to a red card in Varsity. The UWE centre involved was going to study for a masters in Bristol this year, but he didn’t get the grades.

He would have undoubtedly received a warm UBRFC welcome to the club.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? Bob Delaney is the captain of our ship.

Who is the one to watch? Watch out for Ben Weigman on Tinder, on and off the field his stats are incredible.

Regular venues on a social? Roo Bar, Morrisons on Whiteladies for wine club, W.G Grace, and of course Bunker.

Rowing

Nick Foster (Credit: Jamie Corbin)

Course and Year? Biochemistry – 3rd year

Hometown? London

Most memorable moment from last year? I was Head of the River Race this year on the Thames. With waves crashing over our heads and outrageous winds, only some frantic bailing stopped us from sinking.

Some crews weren’t so lucky, and the race got abandoned halfway through. We all definitely needed a pint and a curry when we got back from that.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? We train hard, but because you put so much in you also get so much back out. Fantastic sport, great bunch of people and who doesn’t love winning?

Who is the one to watch? Look out for Chewy. He looks like Napoleon Dynamite and sharks like it’s going out of fashion, but he’s the sort of bloke who you want in tough races.

Regular venue on a social? Lounge.

Snowsports

Laurence Brunt

Course and year? Engineering Mathematics – 3rd Year

Hometown? Stockport

Most memorable moment from last year? Chirpse with Chris.

What makes you the best club in Bristol? We have bare coin.

Who is the one to watch? Look out for Graham Hemingway, a past youth orienteering champion; great rotation on the trampoline, and exceptional drinking tekkers.

Terrible on the snow but definitely worth keeping an eye on nonetheless.

Regular venues on a social? The Hill and obviously Bunker. We also nip up to Edinburgh once a year to teach the Scots a thing or two and we’re in the Alps at least 3 times a year.
