Park Street to turn into real park

Sunday will see Park Street punningly turned into a Park. You can expect cocktails and clowns.

Park Street has never been so notorious. Previously known only for it’s terrible, terrible clubs (Agora and Java anyone?), Park Street’s rep received a watery boost when it was transformed into a good vibes water slide a few weeks ago.

Park street in all its glory.

With memories of that glorious day still fresh in the collective memory, the powers that be (otherwise known as the Park Street Traders Committee) have decided to turn Park Street into a, err, actual park.

The steep road will close to traffic at 7am and an “interactive urban park” will be open between 11am and 10pm. At the bottom of the street there will be a stage where dance and music will take place. As the evening goes on and all the families and kids piss off home to watch Britain’s Got Talent, bars will be doing their own activities such as cocktail demonstrations.

Bristol’s mayor George Ferguson described (with little hyperbole) the park as a ‘good idea’.

The park on Park Street will be split into three separate zones – a traditional park, a creative bit featuring street art and circus skills and a third part tricked out with hay bales and straw for people (and their horses) to relax in.

Second year ancient historian Chris Knights told The Tab “I’m really excited about this, probably even more than I was about the water slide. I used to love parks when I was younger, they were a great place to neck with the ladies and drink tinnies full of cheap cider.”

Park on Park Street runs between 11am and 10pm on Sunday, June 1.
