Bristol grad makes the squad for this summer’s World Cup

Is our boy joining Wazza, Stevie and, err, Phil Jones in Brazil?

Have you heard about the former Bristol student who is preparing to play for England at the World Cup this summer?

Have you spotted the Bristol student in here?

We don’t mean the football tournament unfortunately (that would be fucking cool though) – no, the recent Bristol student is 23 year-old hockey star James Bailey, who is part of England’s 18-strong squad for the World Cup in The Hague.

Bailey, who has less than ten international caps, is one of two goalkeepers selected for the tournament, which will see England face Spain, Belgium, India, Malaysia and world no.1 Australia. Of England’s 18-man squad, 11 players, including Bailey, do not have World Cup experience. Four years ago England lost to the Netherlands in the bronze medal match in India.

Bailey told the Bristol Post “It’s been good to come into the squad. The transition to having been at university to being a full-time athlete was a big change but it’s been great fun”.
