Bristol Vice-Chancellor Sir Eric Thomas has rattled cages everywhere by announcing that he is to step down in August 2015.

In a heartfelt message to students, Sir Eric wrote:

“My time at Bristol has been the most enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling of my professional career and I shall miss the role, the University and the staff and students dreadfully. One of the joys of being Vice-Chancellor is meeting our students as well as hearing about their many successes and achievements. I am fiercely proud of our students and I know that you will continue to be a credit to yourselves and to your University.”

Sir Eric has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol since September 2001 (although this wasn’t the biggest news that month) and is one of the longest-serving UK Vice-Chancellors.

Professor Sir Eric Thomas was knighted by Princess Anne late last year.

The details of finding Eric’s  successor will be discussed at Senate by the Chair of Council on Monday 24th of February and communicated more widely after.

Calls for the succession process to resemble a Game of Thrones style blood-bath have been ignored by Uni chiefs.
