Naked Anthropology student is youngest to row Atlantic
Bristol’s Jamie Sparks and Edinburgh’s Luke Birch have become the youngest two to make it across the Atlantic.
The heroic duo completed the 3000-nautical mile journey in just 54 days, 5 hours and 26 seconds.
They started from the Canary Islands and reached the Caribbean on Monday. They were met by family, fans and international media as they finished in an impressive second place in Antigua.
Jamie and Luke called their challenge ‘Two Boys In A Boat’ and were sponsored by The Tab. They were aiming to raise £100 000 for Breast Cancer Care but they’ve completely smashed that target with £200 000 so far.
22-year-old Jamie is an Anthropology third year student at Bristol, and 21-year-old Luke is studying for a Masters in Human Geography at Edinburgh.
They put on 25kg in preparation but they’ve lost 12kg since they started, after burning 10 000 calories a day.
They rowed in two-hour shifts every day, not even stopping for Christmas or New Year’s since they started on 4 December.
And they did it in the nude: Jamie told The Tab it was prevent chafing from clothes rubbing with sea salt.
The race is called the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, and it’s reportedly the toughest rowing race in the world.
The Two Boys In A Boat have been left with brutally callused hands and are struggling to manage dry land now. Jamie said he “has to learn to walk again!”
Now that they’re back, they’re not wasting any time getting back to uni. Luke said, “I’ve got to go and finish university… back to reality for us!”
